Scary Movie October

I need a project, and it needs to be useless and fun. So, I've decided to lean into my favorite month and spend October watching as many scary movies as I can, and rate them all.

To make this easy, I'm using the Rotten Tomatoes Top 100 Horror Movies list to source the movies. With 23 days left in the month there's no way I can watch all 100. Plus, I've seen a lot of these, some very recently.

The rules are simple. To keep me from being paralyzed by choice, I'm going to watch from the top of the list down. I'll skip the ones I've watched recently enough that I remember them. I'm also not going to go out of my way to find them - they have to be on a streaming service I already have. When I'm done, I'll write up a quick review.

So, here's the list. I'll just add my ratings as I get through them.

  1. Us (2019) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-09
Meh, not really scary. The story is all over the place. Really beautifully shot and the ending is good.
  2. Get Out (2017) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-??-??
Really beautiful and clever movie. It's not keep-you-up-at-night-scary, but it's got moments.
  3. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-09
For a silent movie, this was really engaging! The structure of the story kind of stepped on any suspense, but the sets and overall esthetic was great.
  4. A Quiet Place (2018) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-10
Wow. I watched this entire movie literally on the edge of my seat. This was near perfect suspense, all the way through.
  5. King Kong (1933) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-10
Much better than I thought - a better storyline and the special effects were impressive for the 30s. Not the least bit scary, and in the end I just felt bad for Kong.
  6. Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror (1922) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-10
Once again, a silent movie that was really fun to watch! The story was good. I kind of thought it would be creepier.
  7. Psycho (1960) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-10
It's been a while since I've seen this. Hitchcock is so good at suspense.
  8. The Invisible Man (2020) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-11
The trailer for this looked terrifying. Sadly, it wasn't. A good bit of suspense, but I'm going to sleep fine tonight.
  9. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-11
Until now I had no idea that I liked old monster movies, but apparently I do. This was so good.
  10. The Babadook (2014) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-12
The first half was just a reminder to not have children, but it definitely picks up in the second half. Strange ending though.
  11. Frankenstein (1931) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-12
I liked this. The storyline was similar to a modern horror movie, which is surprising considering how old it is. A little less campy than Bride of Frankenstein.
  12. The Lighthouse (2019) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-13
I had high expectations for this one. It's visually stunning. The acting is amazing. The story is incomprehensible. I don't think I understood what was going on at any point. Unfortunate.
  13. Hereditary (2018) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-14
Finally! That was a legitimately scary movie. Nice buildup, dark, creepy, suspenseful. Thankfully it got a bit over the top at the end, otherwise I'd have trouble sleeping tonight.
  14. It Follows (2015) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-15
That was not scary or suspenseful. It wasn't even mildly interesting to watch. How did this end up on the list?
  15. Let the Right One In (2008) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-16
I absolutely loved this movie. It's not scary or suspenseful. There's a good bit of gore. It's a downright touching movie. So, so good.
  16. Freaks (1932) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-16
I really thought this was going to be cringy and exploitative, but it was a decent story about some outcasts who care for each other. Not scary at all. Zero gore. I liked it.
  17. Aliens (1986) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-16
I think Alien is a better movie, but this is was a ride. Ripley is probably the most bad ass character of all time. Loved it.
  18. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-??-??
I'm surprised how well this movie holds up. It's more creepy than scary, but I've seen it a dozen times which says something.
  19. Night of the Living Dead (1968) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-17
For such a low budget movie, this really delivers. It's the blueprint for all zombie movies that come after it for good reason.
  20. Rosemary's Baby (1968) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-17
I've always thought this movie was creepy. There's something about movies where the protagonist comes off as crazy, but the crazy turns out to be true.
  21. Halloween (1978) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-??-??
Slasher pics are not my thing, but this one is probably my favorite from that generation. The score is great.
  22. Eyes Without a Face (1962) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-17
This was really fun to watch. The score is amazing. It's really creepy and well structured. There's something disturbing about the girl in the mask.
  23. Pan's Labyrinth (2006) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-17
I've seen this a dozen times, but I still didn't skip watching it on this list. One of my absolute favorite movies.
  24. Repulsion (1965) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-19
I wanted to hate this movie, but it was really good. It's also the first movie so far in this list that had a scene I couldn't stomach to watch.
  25. Host (2020) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-20
Really scary and super clever and fun to watch. It's almost like a found footage horror. The use of Zoom during quarantine of was really brilliant.
  26. Possessor: Uncut (2020) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-20
That was a pretty fucked up movie. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but it was definitely an intriguing concept. Not scary, but a lot of blood and gore.
  27. The Witch (2016) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-??-??
I absolutely loved this movie. It's creepy, scary, and twists around enough that you never really know what to believe. So good.
  28. The Cabin in the Woods (2012) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-??-??
This was a disappointment for me. I heard so many great things, but I didn't really find it scary and the plot twist at the end was a bit of a letdown.
  29. The Invisible Man (1933) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-21
    This movie was really boring.
  30. Don't Look Now (1973) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-22
Super weird movie. It wasn't scary, but kinda creepy in that way that movies from this time are. Donald Sutherland is a great actor.
  31. It (2017) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-??-??
I don't find clowns scary, but Bill Skarsgard absolutely makes that character terrifying. Plus, it's just a well structured and well made movie.
  32. Relic (2020) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-23
Yup, that was straight up scary. Like, every trope in the book: crazy old lady, noisy house, creepy and vague family history. Really well done, too.
  33. The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-23
This is a very solid 1907s crime drama. I have no idea how it ended up on a horror movie list.
  34. The Birds (1963) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-23
For how slow the first half is, it gets pretty suspenseful and even scary at the end. It's not my favorite Hitchcock, but it's a good movie.
  35. Young Frankenstein (1974) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-23
I love this movie, and now that I've seen the original Frankenstein movies it's based on, I like it even more.
  36. The Vanishing (1988) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-24
This was so good! The story is really interesting, and the ending is just about perfect. Not scary, really, but creepy at spots.
  37. Ready or Not (2019) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-24
Definitely the bloodiest and goriest of the movies so far, but also kinda fun in a way.
  38. Godzilla (1954) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-24
I liked this better than any modern monster movie. Sure, the special effects don't stand up to modern CGI, but the story was great and the monster was scary.
  39. Drag Me to Hell (2009) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-24
I hated this movie in the first half, until I realized this is supposed to be campy. If you watch this looking for some silly fun, it's pretty good.
  40. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-25
This was not only my favorite movie so far, it unseats "9 Days" for the best movie I've seen in 2021. It's an amazing movie.
  41. The Fly (1958) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-26
This was a slow movie, in that way that old movies can sometimes be. I would have much preferred the Cronenberg version.
  42. House of Wax (1953) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-27
The story was pretty interesting and there were some cool visuals. Vincent Price was great.
  43. Dracula (1931) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-27
This is the first Dracula movie showing him in the modern suave nobleman instead of as a grotesque monster. It was dark for this generation of movies. The story is thin, and never really drew me in.
  44. Midsommar (2019) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-28
This was the movie on the list that I was really excited to see. I was a bit disappointed. It's not scary, really at all. It's gory at times. It's weird, for sure. But I was hoping for scary.
  45. Carrie (1976) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-30
Wow. I haven't watched this movie since I was a kid. This was definitely the creepiest and most disturbing movie so far. It's problematic - basically a master class on the male gaze. Still, a really solid scary movie.
  46. Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (1979) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-30
This was my favorite Dracula movie. Not only is Dracula the monster, he's downright sinister. It's also a nice homage to the original.
  47. The Evil Dead (1981) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-30
I've seen this a few times, and while gory camp is not my thing, this movie hits for me on everything. It's insane and silly and gross. Love it.
  48. The Innocents (1961)
I couldn't find this on any streaming service.
  49. Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (1987) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-30
What can I say? It's a sillier version of the original. Fun, but not as good.
  50. The Loved Ones (2012) ★ ★ ★ ★
    Watched 2021-10-30
Welp, every list like this should end on a movie like this one. I was not emotionally prepared for that movie. Fucking nuts.

One thing that jumps out at me is that this list has a lot of old movies. I might have some trouble finding them on a streaming service. A bunch of the modern ones I've already seen.
