My Journal - April 2005
2005-04-26
Big Red holding some of my precious belongings. (picture by Bish) Now I've got boxes and random things all over my new place. I've had a few hours to unpack, but not the kind of hours it's going to require. I've also got to get my old place all cleaned up and ready for Saturday. So what else? Well, now that the move is pretty much done it time to move on to the next big excitement. For Rachel it's a bachelorette party and wedding. For me it's the much anticipated trip to Europe! This should be a lot of fun. I've got to figure out what to pack, what to pack that stuff in, what to do about money, and what to know about where we're going. I think I'm going to get one of those travel guide books that tourists always have in movies. I don't really care about looking like a tourist, so I think it'll be cool. :)

This weekend I finally got serious about my new place. On Friday and Saturday I painted and moved a couple carloads of boxes. Rachel had a bunch of things to do, but she definitely helped a lot when she had time. After painting I was a little bit concerned about how it would look. Then, on Saturday afternoon the new couch was delivered and once it was in the living room my concerns completely vanished. It looks great. Rachel and I went shopping for things to fill out the space and got some floor lamps, a bookcase and a coffee table. After all that was in and I set the audio/video equipment up, I was blown away about how nice it looked. The best part is, it looks designed and nice and homey, but masculine at the same time. As you can tell I couldn't be happier. I wish I could take the credit but Rachel really came through on this. So, my life has been nothing but shopping for household stuff and boxes and paint and driving the half-mile from my old place to my new place. Ah, what else... I finally got the Epson P-2000 that I've been drooling over. Some nice guy in Ohio (?) sold it to me over Ebay (without all that auction hassle). I've only turned it on twice so far (once to make sure it worked and once to show it off), but already I think it might be my favorite toy of 2005. So, that's it for me. It's almost ten and I've still got laundry to finish and more packing to do. Oh dear God, I'm going to be glad when this moving craziness is over. I just heard that Chad and Dorene are coming up to help me move which is great! BTW, since I'll be moving here very soon my machine will be down for the count for a while. It may be a week or so before I get a chance to do any more updates. When I do get back up, I promise some cool pics of my new pad and hopefully no stories of death-by-moving. Later.

So, what's been going on? Well, as I said before I now officially have both apartments. Last weekend I moved a bunch of stuff. I've been (very) slowly packing up more and now I've close to another car-load to bring over. If I can just keep doing this little by little I should be mostly moved by the official Moving Day, which will make that day a little less painful. Also, sometime in before The Day, I'm going to be painting a few walls in the new place. I'm not the biggest fan of painting in a rented space, but Rachel thought it would look nice so I virtually painted the walls in Photoshop and I've got to admit that it really looks great. Anyway, it's a pretty cheep thing to do and it will make the place feel a little more like My Place. Rachel also bought some shelf thingys to hold photos and candle holders which will look really nice. Overall I'm pretty excited. I've been teaching this Junior Achievement program at the local elementary school. I've got a third grade class. I did my third (of five) visit today and I had a blast. The kids were really excited for me to come in. We have these little activities and teachings that JA gives me and it always turns out that the kids are way too smart and too creative for the material. I'm just blown away by how much they're able to think without any normal boundaries and just say whatever comes to their head. I'll tell you, if you want some good ideas and some creative views, go talk to a group of 7 year olds for an afternoon. Work has been pretty good. I'm finishing up build 1.2 of my NCM project. It was originally planned to take something like 50 hours and it looks like it will come in closer to 30. After that I'm going to fly through build 1.3 (hopefully by the end of this week) and then get back on my favorite pet project: R2. If I can keep up this pace I'll be at least one or two full builds ahead of schedule before I leave for Europe. I'm really going to try and do that because I'd like to take all that time off without feeling guilty about leaving too much work undone. Speaking of Europe, I think I may have finally got that Epson P-2000 that I wanted to bring on the trip. I've been bidding unsuccessfully on them on eBay for a while now and this morning someone just contacted me out of the blue with one he wanted to sell. It isn't factory sealed, but he said he hasn't used it and it's in perfect condition. The whole thing seemed a little shady to me so I asked him to go through the eBay process with me even though I was just going to buy it outright. So, if all goes well, it will be in an insured package on it's way to my doorstep tomorrow morning. Rachel is good. Between the two of us we have filled up our shared schedule through June 25th!!! Dear God, I've never had so much to do. A couple more things before I sign off for the night. First, it appears that our representatives in Washington have proposed extending daylight savings time by two months. From CNN: "'The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use,' said Markey, who cited Transportation Department estimates that showed the two-month extension would save the equivalent of 10,000 barrels of oil a day." Now, I'm not sure what worries me more: that they believe extending daylight savings time will give us more daylight; that they believe this is how we should be decreasing our dependance on fossil fuels; or that this how they spend their time and our money. For some reason this really got under my skin. The other thing was from Chad. Don't hate me for posting this link, but I just can't believe someone actually came up with this. Anyway, here you go. Well, that's it for me. I've got a pretty quiet week ahead of me so I want to catch up on some sleep.

The interior of my car. :) Things at work have been going great. Things outside of work have been going great too. I got the keys to my new apartment today! Rachel and I went looking at paint swatches for a couple of the walls in the new place. Hopefully, in the two-plus weeks before The Official Moving Day, I can get some painting and most of the little stuff moved. Anyway, I've got to get some sleep and whatever. Later. Go to entries for March. |
