My Journal - November 2006

2006-11-19
This last weekend was supposed to be my only completely open weekend for the rest of the calendar year, but alas, I was pretty busy. Glotzman's life partner, Jo, started working at Donaldson last week so we went out for drinks on Friday night. It was fun, but I think I may have had too many. :)

On Saturday morning I helped my dad move the fridge out of their kitchen. They're having the kitchen completely gutted and re-done. It should be really nice when it's done (before Christmas?). Anyway, as it turns out refridgerators are really heavy, especially if you leave the food in it!

Saturday afternoon Chad, Dan, and I went trap shooting for the first time in weeks. We did not shoot well. Anyway, I got some really good shots...

Me hitting a target.

Dan reloading the thrower.

The ground at the trap and skeet stations looks like it was raining shells.

Chad hitting a target, again.

Chad reloading.

The Vikings lost today. Not a big suprise, but still it sucks. I'll be shocked if the Vikings can pull off 8 and 8 this year. Still, crappy football is better than no football at all. :)

I'm taking an intro to writing Excel macros class this Monday and Tuesday. Since the office is closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving, that means I'll have just one actual working day this week. Normally I'd think that is pretty sweet, but since I'm working on R2 now I'm pretty upset. Oh well, I guess that's why they call it a pet project.

Well, that's it for me. Later.

For reasons unknown, I was going through this little site-o-mine tonight and I realized that all the pics I've posted over the past couple years are cool, but I much prefer reading all my old posts over just looking at the pics. Unfortunately it's been quite a while since I've sat down and written anything more than a quick intro to a set of images. So, here goes. Hopefully I'll get into the habit of actually writting stuff on here again.

We're officially into week four (or maybe five?) of our code freeze. This time it's because our Order Management developers seem to be, well, less than perfect (cough). I've been wasting my time catching up on all the meaningless stuff that I normally put off: archiving log files, answering old email, fixing low-priority and low-interest bugs, etc, etc, etc. This week I finally just said screw it and opened up my Gizmo R2 project. It's a complete ground-up re-write of our current intranet system. This time it's all fancy with a database backend, Hibernate layer, Struts, JSP, and the full alphabet soup of other intimidating acronyms. Anyway, it's unfunded and completely unsupported by any business people. The only people who really want to get this thing done is me and my boss. Seriously, we're both pretty freaking excited to see it go. So I've spent all week writing and re-writting the ERD, POJOs, framework code, etc. It's been really great and I'm hoping that I can get just a few more weeks of heads-down work on it. It would make me so happy if I could have it done by the first of the year.

Life outside work? Well, it's been tough. As it turns out I still miss Rachel a ton, especially considering it's been more than two months since we broke up. I guess it's not supposed to be easy.

My car (which I paid off last week, cheer!!!) has been in the shop for the past two days. When I got my winter tires put on the mechanic said there was something "mechanically wrong" with the front end, whatever that means. Anyway, as it turns out I needed two tie rods, a new sway bar, new rear break pads and rotors, and a new seal thingy for my transmission. Grand total: $1,750!!! Holy fscking god, this damned car is costing me a small fortune. With the winter tire change-out (and two new tires for the rear), I'm looking at more than two grand in maintenance for this month alone! To put that in perspective, that's about the cost of The Dog for six years! And The Dog is a hell of a lot more fun. :)

Speaking of, The Dog is officially in super-annoying take-me-on-a-walk mode, so I should get to that.

This weekend I played in a dodgeball tournament. Our team was called The Draught Dodgers. Get it? Yeah, bad pun. Anyway, here's some pics...

Well, that's all for me. Later.

Go to entries for October.
